On March 5th at the Outreach and Technical Assistance Network Technical and Distance Learning Symposium 2021 (OTAN TDL), Halle Smith represented the Institute for Intelligent Systems and the federally funded SARA Reading Diagnostic tool. This presentation, titled "SARA: Remotely Assessing, Supporting, & Diagnosing Adult Learners’ Literacy Skills," walked through using the CaptiVoice platform as an instructor. It also demonstrated how to register and roster students, assign tests, view score reports, and interpret scores. Further, the presentation showed what taking SARA looks like from the students’ perspective.

Additionally, SARA is the focus of ongoing research; this presentation described the ultimate goals of the assessment and how any person can help. By using SARA, you are contributing data that will create a score-scale that is not based on K-12 scoring scales. You are also contributing experiences that will be significant to the creation of recommended instructional frameworks responding to a learner’s score and building an individualized tutoring approach for that student.
